The Burlington Area School District shares information from community organizations as a service to families. The events and programs listed below are not sponsored, endorsed, or supervised by the district, and the district assumes no responsibility for their content, operations, or activities.
 

Student Art Contest: Celebrate Roberto Clemente's Legacy


It’s time for your aspiring young artists to shine! The Milwaukee Brewers are inviting Wisconsin students to participate in an art contest celebrating the legacy and core values of Roberto Clemente. Students are encouraged to create an original piece of artwork that demonstrates Clemente’s commitment to:

  • Understanding the value of helping others
  • Sportsmanship
  • Community involvement
Three student winners will have the opportunity to be recognized on-field at a Brewers game on Friday, September 25, with the first-place winner also getting the chance to throw out the ceremonial first pitch!
Artwork must be submitted by Wednesday, September 16, to be officially entered into the contest. You can submit artwork here.
 

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

4th Annual Day of the Dead Art Competition Details:
  • Entries Due: Friday, October 23rd by 1:00 PM (submit to the main office at your school for pick up).
  • Judging & Display: Selected entries will be showcased at Spooky City in Downtown Burlington on Saturday, October 31st, during our Spooky City inside The Runaway/Jones Block Marketplace (113 E Chestnut St)
  • Winners Announced in November: Then artwork, certificates and prizes will be delivered to schools.
  • All entries must have a student art entry label attached.

Family Literacy Program and English Classes

Racine Literacy Council will be offering their Family Literacy Program and English classes weekly at Waller Elementary on Tuesdays from 5:30-7pm.  This starts on September 15, 2026.

Families can join at ANYTIME, after an intake with an RLC staff member to assess needs.  You do not have to attend/live in BASD - it is open to anyone!  This program is for families with children ages 3-high school.  

RLC provides all the tutors.  They have Spanish speaking tutors available.  There is no cost to families.  Registration is necessary so RLC can assess the family's goals, as well as insure they have enough tutors available to support who is in attendance.  All of the tutors have been background checked and vetted.

EMOTIONAL REGULATION: The Heart of ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Behavior PRESENTED BY: DR. MERVIN LANGLEY, AURORA

Presentation 1: THURSDAY OCTOBER 15, 2026, from 6-7:30pm
Understanding Emotional Dysregulation and the First Steps in Cultivating Emotional Regulation

  • Understand ADHD, ODD, and executive functioning
  • Learn science-based methods to boost your child’s self-control and executive functioning
  • Understand unique concerns for girls with ADHD/ODD and the importance of early intervention
  • Learn six powerful tools that focus on discipline rather than punishment to improve parent-child interactions

Presentation 2: THURSDAY OCTOBER 22, 2026, from 6-7:30pm
Practical Strategies for Improving Emotional Regulation
  • Learn how to help children with their big feelings and help manage tantrums
  • Learn 5 steps for improving behavior
  • Learn how to be your child’s emotion coach
  • Learn how to motivate your child

ABOUT DR. MERVIN LANGLEY of Aurora Behavioral Health
Dr. Mervin Langley is a licensed psychotherapist who was born in South Africa before immigrating to the US. Dr. Langley earned his PhD and worked as a Research Coordinator for the South African National Council on Alcoholism. Dr. Langley currently provides therapy to children and teenagers through Aurora Behavioral Health.

FREE classes to learn English offered by GTC

Gateway’s English Language Learning (ELL) program offers instruction in reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, listening and speaking. Classes meet two days a week for six hours per week. Multiple levels of classes are offered.

What do I need to do?
• You must be at least 18 years old.
• You will need a photo ID.
• Students are required to purchase a set of books. Books cost approximately $55
(subject to change without notice).
• Attend a two-day orientation
Before attending classes you must first complete a 2-day orientation session in which you will learn about Gateway, learn your English level, and register for classes.
